Increased Demand for Electricity and System Response Challenges to Load Increase
Today, Sunday, July 20, 2025, the Information and Decision Making Support Center at Bayt Al-Hikma held a scientific lecture titled "Increased Demand for Electricity and System Response Challenges to Load Increase." The lecture was attended by the Chairman of Bayt Al-Hikma's Board of Trustees, Dr. Qahtan Ni'ma Al-Khafaji, and took place in the Mirrors Hall.
The session was chaired by Dr. Naseer Karim Qassem, Advisor to the Prime Minister for Renewable Energy Affairs, and presented by Professor Maher Abdel Sada Abdel, a member of the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE).
The lecture highlighted the significant challenges facing Iraq's electricity grid due to increasing loads and the widening gap between demand and generation. It emphasized the necessity of mobilizing all national efforts from both public and private sectors to develop rapid solutions using advanced technologies.
The researcher discussed energy management and load control, presenting a set of statistics on electricity in Iraq up to July 2025, as well as future plans and expected indicators for the next five years. The researcher also pointed out internal and external challenges facing Iraq's electricity system, most notably climate change, which is considered a dangerous factor impacting power generation. He recommended the development of a national strategy to adopt digital transformation in monitoring and measurement resources at power generation plants to improve production efficiency and reduce emissions, enhance the transmission networks' capacity, and launch a national guide for implementing an energy management system in accordance with international organization standards and other recommendations concerning raising the efficiency of Iraq's electricity system.
This lecture was held on the sidelines of the forum titled "Iraq and the Future of Energy: Development, Transfer, and Localization of Technology," which will be organized by the Information and Decision Making Support Center in the coming period.
The seminar was attended by a group of specialized energy researchers and academic professors who enriched the session with their comments and interventions.
