 "The Eloquence of Conciseness: The Philosophy of Economy in Language and Meaning"
The Department of Linguistic and Translation Studies at Baytul-Hikma held a dialogue session on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, titled "The Eloquence of Conciseness: The Philosophy of Economy in Language and Meaning." The event took place in Maraya Hall, with the attendance of Dr. Qahtan Neama Al-Khafaji, Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Baytul-Hikma.
The session was chaired by Prof. Dr. Redha Kamel Al-Mousawi from Al-Bayan University, and the lecture was delivered by Prof. Dr. Sabah Al-Sulayman from the University of Tikrit.
The lecture focused on linguistic economy as a prominent feature of language, with particular attention to its manifestations in the Holy Qur’an, the Hadith, and classical Arabic expressions. The phenomenon, which exists across all languages, has been widely examined in both Arabic and Western studies—especially in the Arabic language.
In his paper, the lecturer explored the concept and motivations behind linguistic economy, comparing the roles of Classical Arabic and spoken dialects in achieving brevity. He also discussed strategies of economy in written and spoken forms, and how digital technologies have influenced linguistic conciseness—altering vocabulary, structure, and meaning.
The paper took abbreviation in the digital age as a model, highlighting the impact of text messaging and digital communication on language structure and richness. The speaker emphasized the need to preserve meaning and conceptual depth, especially since the Arabic language is inherently rich in conciseness due to its derivational, dynamic, and rule-based nature.
The session was attended by a group of specialized researchers and academic scholars who enriched the discussion with their remarks and interventions.
