Energy Self-Sufficiency: A Cornerstone on the Path to Development
As part of Bayt al-Hikma’s ongoing participation in the activities of the 26th Baghdad International Book Fair, the Center for Information and Decision Support organized a scientific lecture entitled “Energy Self-Sufficiency: A Cornerstone on the Path to Development” on Friday, September 12, 2025, attended by Dr. Qahtan Naama Hassan Al-Khafaji, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Bayt al-Hikma.
The session was chaired by Dr. Naseer Kareem Al-Sudani, Advisor to the Prime Minister, with Dr. Mohammed Bahjat Thamer from the College of Education, Al-Mustansiriya University, serving as rapporteur, and was presented by consulting engineer Prof. Maher Al-Aamiri.
The researcher focused on the key requirements and needs Iraq faces in the field of renewable energy, while highlighting the country’s large annual dependence on fossil fuels. Using figures, maps, and charts, he outlined the volume of energy produced in Iraq, supported by detailed tables of steam power plants generating electricity. He also reviewed the range of strategic economic, technical, and administrative projects required to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, noting that such measures could take no less than ten years to achieve.
The lecture also emphasized enabling factors for achieving energy self-sufficiency, foremost among them sound government policies, well-planned energy consumption, optimal resource investment, and the adoption of circular and microeconomic systems as pathways to sustainable development.
In the same context, the session chair announced ambitious government projects and effective steps being taken toward a transition to renewable energy, with a focus on implementing the largest possible number of projects.
The lecture was attended by a wide audience of professors, specialists, postgraduate students, and researchers in the fields of energy and development.
